Domaine Constant-Duquesnoy is another exciting new addition to our portfolio. The vineyards were formally part of Domaine Les Aussellons which was founded over 100 years ago, but in 2004; the owner Jean Ezingard decided to split the domaine and sell off 30 hectares of Vinsobres which were purchased by Gerard Constant and Denise Duquesnoy.
Gerard Constant, a successful Belgium businessman was passionate about wine and had harboured an ambition of owning his own vineyard for many years. His work had taken him too many of the world’s most famous wine regions where he had taken the opportunity to visit vineyards and eventually studied viticulture at Beaune. In his quest to find his vineyard, he took advice from some of France’s top winemakers in Burgundy, Alsace and the Rhone valley and waited until the opportunity arose for him to acquire a vineyard in a promising location – on the slopes, with a good aspect etc. His 30 hectares of vineyards are at an altitude of 250-400 metres with a south-easterly aspect. Due to their very steep gradient, they are largely terraced.
With his drive for perfection and love of great wine, it took him just a couple of years to gain international recognition, with Robert Parker describing the 2007 In Fine as one of the greatest wines he had ever tasted from Vinsobres. This new found reputation had gone before him but still I was amazed by the quality of these wines. These are real class! They are full bodied and complex with superb concentration of fruit and stylish minerality. They are seriously structured and impeccably balanced. Not the cheapest wines from Vinsobres but certainly the most stylish.
