This fabulous domaine is situated close to the sea near to Beziers. In fact the beach is located just behind the domaine as I soon discovered. And what a beach! Je suis en vacance! The domaine comprises 24ha, split between two dramatically different locations. 12ha of AC Coteaux du Languedoc are situated on the plateau with a terroir strikingly reminiscent of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, covered in the large galet stones on a sub soil of argile/calcaire. A key factor to the style and quality of the wines produced here is immediately evident, as the persistent sea breeze sweeps through the vines. Hence the microclimate here is completely different to that of the vineyards more inland. Anne-Laure, who runs the domaine today with her husband Sebastien and father Jacques, tells me that the family purchased these vineyards in 1990 when they were given AC status and replanted with the obligatory syrah, together with Grenache and mourvedre. The remaining 12ha lie across the road from the domaine among the marsh lands. There can be no mistaking the terroir here – sable! It is literally like being ‘back on the beach’. The roots are very shallow, to avoid reaching the salt water and hence, there is a danger of the vines being uprooted when the sands are disturbed in the strong coastal winds. However, the vineyards are still protected by barriers of tall reeds, planted by Anne-Laure’s grandfather. The vines here produce the domaine’s superb range of Vin de Pays. Indeed tasting through all the wines here one is immediately struck by their consistently high quality. There is an amazing refinement to the ‘humble’ vdp syrah which oozes opulently pure syrah fruit, whilst the Brame Rellie shows the supreme heights of complexity and finesse that the cepage can achieve. The straight Coteaux du Languedoc is yet another success with a wonderfully fragrant bouquet and real poise.

2007 Coteaux du Languedoc 'Brame Rellie' 95% syrah, 5% mourvedre in 100% new oak. Don’t be deterred as I was. The oak is surprisingly discrete and very well employed. Really opaque in the glass. Fabulous deep, brooding black fruit with hint of oak but behind the fruit. Really fabulous intensity and unctuous black fruit, spice and mineral. Excellent balance here and long, classy finish. (VR)
