Oh, where to place the wines of the incomparable Baptiste Grangeon. I have pondered this question for a while now: the young Baptiste, one feels, sitting comfortably on the fence between the two styles forging his own, unique path. I have erred on the side of caution, not wishing to rock the boat too much and while there is a nod towards the modernists – barrique ageing for the Syrah and Mourvedre, I suspect Baptiste’s heart, if not his head, is firmly planted in a different era. Wherever one places Cristia this is an estate that has climbed to the top with extraordinary rapidity, driven, one suspects, by Baptiste’s own force of nature! The estate was founded in 1942 by Baptiste’s grandfather, but the domaine only started bottling in 1999 and is today run both Baptiste and his sister Dominique. The majority of the vines are grown on the lieu-dit of Cristia on the road between the village and Courthezon, where the estate is situated. Their classique/traditional cuvee (oh, how I hate these labels!) has been made with extreme love and attention, since Baptiste is well aware of the dangers of producing too many luxury cuvees at the expense of the standard one.

It is inky black and possesses a wonderful grilled, cassis filled bouquet with a touch of licorice and hickory. Full and brimming with ripe silky fruits, the tannins being not too intrusive allowing this cuvee to give great pleasure now. Complex with a superb finish this is no ‘basic’ cuvee, in fact this wine on its own would justify the estates escalating reputation. 3-10+. (JG)
