Bodegas Alcanadre is a large modern co-operative, filled with a number of state of the art Stainless steel fermentation tanks. The winery however dates back to 1957 and the old cellars are still used principally for the malolactic fermentation in the old concrete vats.
We were shown round by Olga Martinez the wine maker, who explained that they currently deal with around 250 members who in turn farm around 590 hecatres of vines, with the vineyards ranging from 30 to 100 years old. Olga like many of the new breed of negociants and co-operative wine makers oversees the production of the grapes from all the members and lays down a specific set of instructions for them to follow The vine are planted principally between 400-600 metres above sea level on east facing slopes, on clay-limestone soil. She explained that they enforced quality control through the price that they pay for the grapes, if the grower wants to get the best possible price for his grapes they have to be top quality. Over the years they have learned that in order to raise the quality level they must lower production and use little or no treatments.
