The estate is run by Aldo Cifola and was founded by his father. Tasting through a number of vintages and reading numerous reviews from past and present it soon became apparent that La Monacesca must be one of Italy’s most consistent estates producing good quality wines irrespective of the vintage. I suppose that should not come as too much of a surprise when one learns that the oenologist here is no other than Roberto Cipresso.
Today La Monacesca has 23 hectares. 18 hectares comprise Verdicchio, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc whilst the remaining 5 are planted with Sangiovese and Merlot. These vineyards are situated at an altitude of 450 metres above sea level. Aldo Cifola’s resolve to produce great wine and the artistic expertise of Roberto Cipresso are proving a formidable team. The yields are strictly controlled and the relatively late harvest is meticulously selected to ensure optimum ripeness. The depth, concentration and deliciously ripe fruit of the La Monacesca puts a very different and uplifting emphasis on the name Verdicchio.
