The domaine is situated above the Krems valley, in the village of Priel near Senftenberg. The 25 hectares which make up the estate, are located in several of the best single sites of the Kremstal. His two most important vineyards in the Krems valley are Piri for Riesling and Gruner Veltliner and Hochacker for Riesling. These are two of the top crus of Senftenberg and are extremely steep with a terroir of primary rock. The remaining vineyards are in the town of Krems.
The Urgesteinsriede Kremsleiten is particularly good for Riesling. 40% of the total plantings are Riesling and 40% Gruner Veltliner, the remaining 20% comprise Sauvignon Blanc, Weissburgunder, Chardonnay and Zweigelt. The domaine was founded by Martin’s parents in 1986 and is still run as a family concern. Martin is responsible for the wine making and his brother Josef the vineyard management. The Nigl’s have taken great care to plant each variety in the locations where the micro-climate and terroir best suits them. Josef’s dedicated management in the vineyards and Martin’s flare and skill in the winery combine to produce some of the Kremstal’s most scintillating wines. Nigl’s finest Riesling and Gruner Veltliners are sold under the label “Privat”. The grapes for these wines are grown on old vineyards in the Senftenberger Piri. The rootstocks here are over 35 years of age grown on primary rock soils, producing minute yields. Both the Gruner Veltliner and Riesling Privat are incredibly concentrated with superb complexity and mineral characteristics - and an amazing ability to age.

2004 Gruner Veltliner 'Alte Reben' Scrupulous selection for healthy fruit, Nigl opines, permitted him overnight skin contact which in turn enhanced the intensity of flavors and the medium to full body of the resultant wine. Black currant, huckleberry and green bean aromas lead to a creamy, rich palate of black fruits and herbs and a solid finish. (RP)

2004 Riesling 'Privat' Stone fruits and floral nuances on the nose. Sleek and refreshing but slightly raw and edgy in its youth, with the acid structure currently blocking the wine's intensity and power. This wine calls for bottle aging, but should begin to harmonize by 2008 and offer very drinking pleasure to 2014. (ST)

2004 Riesling 'Seftenberger Piri' Fresh banana and anise on the nose, lifted by delicate spicy nuances. Nervy, racy and firm in the mouth, with complex mineral traces adding complexity. The long finish features delicate peach and tropical fruit and floral flavours and offers unmistakable varietal character. Drink 2006 through 2012. (ST)

2005 Gruner Veltliner 'Gartling' Is a picture perfect example of how this variety can be light in alcohol (11%) yet full of interesting, ripe flavors and (based on its ex-cellars price) represents one of the most outstanding values I tasted on my recent trip. Delicate citrus, floral, sweet pea, and herbal notes on the nose lead to a billowing and crystal clear palate informed by sweet clover, lemon, orange, and underlying brothy and salty manifestations of minerality. The wine is smooth and polished in mouth feel and with an airy openness, its finish delicate yet amazingly long, and as refreshing as one could ask. (RP)

2005 Gruner Veltliner 'Kremser Friehiet' In the mouth, a rich peachy fruit and ore-like, savory sense of “the mineral” ally themselves to the flavors of legumes. Nutty, malty, rich low notes and bright lime citricity extend the range of expression, and this finishes with long, savory traces in all registers, if not quite the finesse or perfect balance of the Gartling. Certainly it represents another outstanding value and proves Nigl this year’s consummate master of the supposedly modest, introductory-level, low alcohol (in this instance 11.5%) wine. (RP)

2005 Riesling 'Hochacker' An intense, fruity and aromatic nose of white stone fruit, peach, lovely soft spices, apricot along with a slight pepper note. Very complex and beautifully balanced by zesty lemon notes. Dry, medium acidity. Clean and mineral laced, full of gorgeous creamy white stone fruits and apricot, which opens into a wonderfully spicy middle. Delineated and long with a grapefruit twist at the end. (CG)
