Francois Barmes who runs this young domaine is another vigneron who is dedicated to producing 'vins de terroir'. He is a real perfectionist and practices biodynamic viticulture. The extensive range includes several lieux dits and Grand Crus in each grape variety. The lieux dits include Rosenberg, Herrenweg, Wintzenheim, Leimenthal and Kruett, their Grand Crus vineyards are on Hengst, Steingruber and Pfersigberg. The Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris lean towards opulence but retain a brilliant balance. The Grand Cru Rieslings are dry and racy with stunning length and delineation.

2004 Pinot Gris Pfleck Very open bouquet with intense minerals and zesty, ripe fruits. Dry, only 3.3 g/l residual here, much more mineral and smoky. Very concentrated, complex and long with distinctive mineral character of terroir on finish. Racy and delineated. (VR)

2004 Riesling Clos Sand This wine got a particularly ‘big’ tick from me. Quite closed on the nose but very pure with ripeness and minerality coming through. The palate possesses the same purity but with more intense ripe fruit and subtle flint and mineral complexity. Fine balance of acidity and great length. 8.7 g/l residual sugar and 7.8 g acidity. (VR)

2004 Riesling Hengst A mere 8 g/l residual here. Clean, pure bouquet with good ripeness and definite mineral and chalky character – very persistent. The mineral qualities carry through on to the palate which is still very youthful at present but with good weight of fruit behind. This definitely needs time to fulfil its potential. Fine balance of acidity and great length. (VR)

2004 Riesling Rosenberg Pale yellow. Ripe peach on the nose, with more exotic suggestions of tropical fruits and honey. Juicy, fruity and nicely dry (actually 4.8 g/l r.s.), with subtle fruit and spice flavours. Not a fleshy wine but finishes with good persistence. (ST)

2005 Gewurztraminer Rosenberg ‘Barmes’ 2005 Gewurztraminer Rosenberg was very long in fermentation. Peppermint, lemon zest, white pepper, and rose petal in the nose lead to a strikingly bright, juicy palate impression that puts me in mind of Riesling. Tasting almost dry thanks to the combination of relatively low residual sugar with efficacious acidity, it hides its alcohol completely, finishing with lip-smacking juiciness, invigorating salinity, and pungent smokiness, citrus zest, peppermint and pepper. This palate-saturating, stimulating, sassy, and utterly improbable take on Gewurztraminer is one of several striking Barmes successes that must be tasted to be believed. How it will evolve is anybody’s guess, but if it tones down a little (as it surely will) one could then at least take off the sunglasses and get a better look. I for one shall be following this inevitably food-friendly wine for a few years with piqued curiosity.’, Robert Parker (91)

2005 Riesling Hengst Riper, more intense bouquet with hints of pineapple and mineral. Dry and more powerful on the palate with the flavours mirroring the aromas. Once again there is a real lift and drive of acidity here. Delineated, complex and long with a great promise of longevity. (VR)
