Philippe Foreau still works the domaine following the traditions of his Grandfather but has brought a polish and elegance to the wines. Indeed we believe he produces the purist and most profound expression of Vouvray today. Unsurprisingly yields are kept low and the grapes are carefully selected in the vineyard, which is picked in successive tris. Only natural yeasts are used for the slow fermentation, which takes place in old 300 litre casks. There is no chaptilisation or acidificaiton and the wine is therefore a true reflection of the year.

1991 Vouvray Sec A rich, mature fruit nose. Heavy aromas of banana, apricot oil with a crisp, mineral edge. This is one of those quaintly old fashioned, slightly odd Loire wines - deep, rich, mature fruit. Big, mouth filling, very nutty with a balanced almost sour lemon/ grapefruit acidity. Long finish with hints of hay/ sawdust. (CG)

2005 Vouvray Demi-Sec With a winsome bouquet of honeysuckle, buddleia, quince, marzipan, ginger, and apricot, this proves amazingly dense and rich in the mouth, with deep, bitter-sweet walnut and fruit pit notes, yet still bespeaks a remarkable elegance and a nearly perfect balance of fruit and acidity. Without benefit of the label, many tasters would call this wine of 18 grams residual sugar “dry.” An eloquent exchange of wood smoke, chalk and salt with quince, apple, marzipan, ginger, and sweet flowers marks its long, engaging, finish. This demi-sec that can be enjoyed now, but will not be at its best for at least several years, should be worth following for at least a decade. (RP)

2005 Vouvray Moelleux Smelling intensely of pear and quince, citrus and flowers, it comes to the palate with baked pear, quince jelly, almond, and honey, soft in texture, with a note of fresh lime juxtaposed with a hint of caramelization in the finish. While not possessed of the elegance and complexity of the demi-sec, it is early days for this wine, which can certainly be retained for at least the next 10-12 years. (RP)

2005 Vouvray Moelleux Reserve ‘Foreau’s 2005 Vouvray Moelleux Reserve smells spectacularly and kaleidoscopically of quince and apricot paste, date, honey, nutmeg, sweet floral perfume, pear distillate, lemon, white raisin, and hints of bitter quinine and smoky Calvados. Extraordinarily rich on the palate, yet clear, juicy in primary fruit character, and with luscious citrus leavening its concentration of nutmeg- and cinnamon-tinged apricot and quince, this finishes with terrific length and penetration, still clear and pure as honey, quince, apricot, apple blossoms and lilies slowly dissipate. Here is a Vouvray for the ages. Its 154 grams of residual sugar are by no means overwhelming and should assist it in a long, slow evolution. Furthermore, they are the reason one can enjoy the elegance and delicacy of 11.5% alcohol after, following sec, demi-sec and moelleux that weighed in at a surprisingly uniform 13.5%. Even in tough years, Foreau never disappoints. But in 2004, after rigorous triage of fruit and young wine, he bottled only one still Vouvray, and very little of that.’ Robert Parker (96)
