The vineyards of the aristocratic Chateau d'Epire comprise 4.5 hectares of 'Le Parc' situated in the proximity of the Chateau, 2.5 hectares of 'La Croix Picout' overlooking the Loire and the vineyard 'Le Hu-Boyau' which is situated just above 'Coulee de Serrant'. Until last year all the parcels were vinified separately but then blended together to produce the Savenniere, Chateau d'Epire and, when the vintage allowed, a Moelleux cuvee. In 2000 however, Luc decided that the vines from Le Hu-Boyau should be kept separate. This special vineyard contains Epire's oldest vines which together with the influence of its terroir of blue volcanic rock produces wines of incredible character.
The Cuvee Speciale is produced from the parcel closest to Coulee de Serrant. The wine is fermented in old barriques for one month and then matured on its lies until March. It then stays a further four months in cask before bottling. Once again we have selected a particular cask to be bottled unfiltered. This is a sensational, traditional style of Savennieres. It possesses majestic purity with superb weight, concentration and complexity. The length is breathtaking.

2005 Savennieres Nose quite closed at first – very mineral but then opening in the glass to reveal intense, ripe stone fruits – apricot in particular. Really full, luscious and harmonious on the palate with exquisite balance between the steely minerality and exotic fruits. Long, clean finish. (VR)
