The vineyards of the aristocratic Chateau d'Epire comprise 4.5 hectares of 'Le Parc' situated in the proximity of the Chateau, 2.5 hectares of 'La Croix Picout' overlooking the Loire and the vineyard 'Le Hu-Boyau' which is situated just above 'Coulee de Serrant'. Until last year all the parcels were vinified separately but then blended together to produce the Savenniere, Chateau d'Epire and, when the vintage allowed, a Moelleux cuvee. In 2000 however, Luc decided that the vines from Le Hu-Boyau should be kept separate. This special vineyard contains Epire's oldest vines which together with the influence of its terroir of blue volcanic rock produces wines of incredible character.
The Cuvee Speciale is produced from the parcel closest to Coulee de Serrant. The wine is fermented in old barriques for one month and then matured on its lies until March. It then stays a further four months in cask before bottling. Once again we have selected a particular cask to be bottled unfiltered. This is a sensational, traditional style of Savennieres. It possesses majestic purity with superb weight, concentration and complexity. The length is breathtaking.

2004 Savennieres Well they certainly don’t get any purer than this 2004 Cuvee Speciale. The bouquet soars from the glass with a magical intensity of ripe fruit and mineral – clean and direct. The palate is bone dry with wonderful delineation – it offers an abundance of mouth-watering ripe peach and apricot fruits combined with a steely, mineral force and a racy acidity. Powerful but elegant with a long, lingering finish. An incredibly classy wine, which must be the ‘bargain’ of the year! |(VR)
