Tucked away along a short dirt track between the villages of Buisson and Visan is Roche-Audran, now owned and meticulously run by the young and energetic Vincent Rochette. Vincent took control of his family?s vineyards in 1996 and in 1998 built la cave de vinification and the temperature-controlled cuverie in which to raise his finest wines. The estate comprises two separate parcels of land. The first is in the commune of Visan and was inherited from Vincent?s cousin. The second parcel is situated behind the winery and lies in the commune of Buisson, which was purchased in 1962 by Pierre Rochette, Vincent?s father and contains vines planted in 1901. There is an enormous diversity of terroirs here, which goes some way to explain the complexity of the wines that Vincent produces. The attention to detail here is staggering and is evident from the very first glance around the winery. Each plot of vines is harvested individually and when the grapes have reached perfect maturity. All this is carried out by hand. After a strict selection, both in the vineyards and back at the winery, the grapes from each parcel are fermented separately in a mixture of epoxy-lined concrete cuvees and stainless steel vats. Very little sulphur is employed and no fining or filtration of the red wines is carried out. The finest lots of red wine from both communes are then aged in a variety of oak pieces for up to 18 months.

2003 Cotes du Rhone 'Cesar' Coming from vines grown near village of Buisson and comprises 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache aged in 1/2/3 year old barriques. Velvety in texture and brimming with spices, kirch, jam and tobacco. Full flavoured and exceptionally concentrated. Very Provencal! Drink 2006-2010. (JG)
