Domaine Sang des Cailloux, run by the enigmatic Serge Ferigoule.. The property is a somewhat disordered affair situated on the outskirts of Sarrians, a commune of Vacqueyras. Primarily Grenache based, the grapes are hand picked, carefully selected and after fermentation are aged in old oak foudres for up to two years. There is no filtration at all here and the yields are extremely low. The results are big, chunky, very concentrated wines with their own style that set them apart from the vast majority of wines from this AOC which are frequently simple and, to be honest, ordinary. These wines are not for the faint hearted. They possess such amazing richness and levels of complexity that one would be fooled into thinking they were from a top estate in Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

2002 Vacqueyras 'Doucinello' Clean, fruity nose. Youthful with blackcurrant, cherry, animals and herbs. Upfront and quite complex. Dry, light in body (the vintage), quite ripe fruit, currant and cherry, soft, low acidity and tannins with spice and herb notes. Nice peppery middle and a good length. (CG)

2003 Vacqueyras 'Lopy' Made from the oldest vines, usually from one plot, the 2003 Lopy is immense. Full throttle fruit flavours fill the mouth, with huge but ripe tannins. This cuvee would not look out-of-place in Chateauneuf. Wonderful potential (the 2001 is amazing now). The 2003 Lopy promises greatness. 2008-2015+ (JG)

2005 Vacqueyras 'Doucinello' Deeply coloured with a glorious bouquet of Provencal herbs and cassis. Rich and robust with mouth-filling fruits, soft ripe tannins and a heady full-bodied finish. This will undoubtedly age for 5-8+ years or more. (JG)

2005 Vacqueyras 'Lopy' Made from 70 year of vines and aged in new and one/two year barrique. This is immense and brimming with blackberry and cassis fruits. Inky black and amply endowed with luxurious tannins. A real chewy mouth-full with oodles of fruit flavours and a powerful, long finish. I would love to see this beauty in 10+ years or so. (JG)
