Jean Paul Versino is one of Chateauneuf-du-Pape’s great characters. Still youthful and energetic, tasting with him can be somewhat exhausting. He speaks with passion about his work and his enthusiasm can be infectious. Although from the new generation, his ideas and methods are very much honed by tradition. His Chateauneuf-du-Pape is among the most elegant and Burgundian of all. They are svelte and pure and can be seductively perfumed. Both cuvees are based upon very old Grenache with a touch of Mourvedre. Ageing is in foudre for the classique and in six year old barrique for the Felix. Interestingly, Jean-Paul employs no sulphur during the elevage and only the barest minimum at bottling. This lack of sulphur allows his wines to reveal their enticing aromas and flavours.

2004 Chateauneuf-du-Pape An intense, ripe nose of redcurrant and buckets of spice. Quiet Burgubdian and elegant. Dry, low acidity, medium tannins, ripe, spicy, earthy red fruits and provencal herbs. Lovely intensity with a very peppery middle and finish. Very elegant with a coffee/ herby finish and the tannins returning. (CG)

2004 Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Felix' Their top cuvee shows resiny pine forest notes interwoven with the spice box, pepper, liquorice, deep black currants, and sweet, richer black cherries. A generous, full-bodied wine that is multi-layered, intense, and at the same time spicy and Provencal, it should drink well young yet cellar well for 12-15 years. (RP)

The 2005 Classique (that horrible word again!) is devine, beautifully poised with herbs, spice and garrigue aromas. Soft and velvety on the palate, seductive and finely balanced. (JG)

2005 Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Felix' The cuvee Felix has perhaps more concentration, a hint of leather and thyme with a profound richness and depth. The flavours here linger long after one has swallowed. Jean-Paul’s wines age beautifully revealing hidden complexities. Certainly 10-15+ for either cuvee, especially given the style and structure of the 2005 vintage. (JG)
