The young and boyish Stephane Montez took over the running of the property from his father some years ago and a once excellent domaine has become world-class. It is Stephane's extraordinary St. Josephs that, over the last few years, have created a stir. His regular cuvee is a delicious wine fermented in a variety of old oak piece and foudres, but his Cuvee du Papy (Granddad's wine!) is something extraordinary. This wine is made from late harvest Syrah and fermented and aged in new oak. The wine then spends up to two years in barrel before bottling unfiltered. This super-concentrated wine is as good as any in the appellation and unlike many red St. Josephs demands 5-8 years cellaring. Around 350-400 cases are produced. Tasting with Stephane is a test of one's endurance, since after the tenth barrel of Cuvee du Papy one craves a little light refreshment as well as a dentist!
