Mathieu Barret owns 4 hectares of vines inherited from his grandfather several years ago. Up until 2001 he sold all his fruit to negoce. This, he says, gave him time to experiment and learn about his vineyards and the art of wine making. He has also become a convert to bio-dynamism, which led nicely into an hour’s ‘chat’ about the importance of the moon and its cycles. At present he keeps but a handful of barrels to sell under his own name – he pleasingly prefers to sell off any wine with which he is not entirely satisfied. His vineyards, like most in Cornas, are extremely old. His average yields are around 15-17hl/ha but in 2003 they were down to a miserly 8hl. Tasting from barrel to barrel, from the 2003 vintage to the youthful 2004, it became very apparent that here was someone, not only with passion and intelligence, but who could make wonderful, flavour-packed Cornas. The age old problem with Cornas is how to tame the often wild, harsh tannins. Since the wine World has never truly got to grips with having high dental bills from drinking a youthful Cornas, it has become increasing necessary to find a producer who could calm those aggressive guardians of longevity. 2003 Cornas 'Les Terrasses du Serre' Named after his oldest vineyards on the lieu-dit of Serre, this is an exemplary wine. Deeply coloured with a bouquet of leather, black fruits, taponade and spice. Soft but ripe tannins, a delicious mouth-filling array of fruit and a pure, silky finish. Great wine, great Cornas. (JG)
