Award winning spirit drink made with apples, blackcurrants & apple brandy, using a traditional welsh recipe dating back to the 1890's. A lot more viscous with a deeper, thicker less spirity nose than the old 30% bottling, with cereal, sweet blackcurrant, liquid dark honey - more complex fruitiness and amplified sweetness. Very thick in the mouth, sweet, darkly honied with very pure blackcurrant fruit. A lot more fruitier, more viscous, it has a greater overall impression of sweetness - more a fruit toddy!
Not as spirty as the old 40% bottling, but richer, sweeter, more oily fruit. Has more of an armagnac note young baco? - a bit foxy! With herbs and less spice. Oilier palate, initially less sweet and a lot oilier. That foxy note is present as is a boiled sweet note. Quite a bit of herbs, armagnac dried fruit, marzipan, real honey. Medium length, lacks the tang of alcohol, finishes sweet.
According to the letter that accompanied this sample. “Our Keepers Tipple is a whinberry whisky liqueur. In the true tradition of all our drinks has been developed from an old recipe from the Usk Valley where the whinberries still grow wild on the side of the Blorenge Mountain in the area known as the Keepers’ Hill” – Seriously! I’m not making this up!
Anyway on to what it tastes like: I was expecting a light, fruity, fluffy nose, but whoa! This is unexpected. It’s serious, herby, smoky wild and fruity with coffee, blackcurrant, blueberry, damsons, plums and perfumed kirsch-like top note. Thick and smoky on the palate. There is a touch of rose petal marc to open the proceedings then it gets quiet sweet with loads of blueberry, loganberry, blackcurrant, and do I detect a bit of peat amidst the wild, scrubby herbs? Although low in alcohol it keeps the sweetness in check quiet nicely and th finish is not bad either! If you like their Black Mountain then you will love this.
Made from a traditional recipe & is a mixture of oatmeal, honey and water. It has a spicy, leaf bouquet with hints of honey with eycalyptus/menthol notes. The palate is rich, rounded with natural honey flavours & leafy notes. Quite sweet with a long smooth, sweet finish.
