CHAPOUTIER SELECTION PARCELLAIRES - NEW ADDITIONS

2007 Cotes du Roussillon Villages ‘VIT’, Domaine Bila-Haut (per 6x75cl)
65% Grenache and 45% Syrah. It has taken Michel six years of observation and analysis in order to gain an understanding of this rich and complex terroir. This is a unique blend of 70 year old Grenache grown on a magnificent plot in the heart of the garrigue scrubland and two plots of Syrah, one ripened slowly on vines grown on clayey limestone soil and the other grown on schist soil. The wine undergoes a long maceration of at least 4 weeks with constant pigeage, and is aged for 18 months, 50% in tank and 50% in barrels.

The wine displays and intensity of leather, tobacco, dense, herby blackcurrant/ cherry fruit. Over time it evolved to an even greater degree of complexity, enhanced by hints of super ripe, spicy redcurrant and dark chocolate. Juicy, pure and very young. Low acidity, medium ripe tannins. Opens with an abundance of spicy, sweet redcurrant fruit, followed by the most amazing pure cherry mid palate, intermingled with a warm herby character and finishing with a touch of coffee/ hickory.

2007 ‘Ex-Aequo’, Domaine Jose Bento Dos Santos (per 6x75cl)
75% Syrah and 25% Touriga Nacional. Jose Bento Dos Santos and Michel selected some of the oldest Syrah vines from the Chapoutier vineyards in Hermitage and Cote Rotie. These were then grafted onto rootstock in the vineyards of La Quinta do Monte d’Oiro in the Estramadura region of Portugal. Grown on a Jurassic clay/ limestone soil and blessed with an oceanic climate has allowed the wine to posses a richness, subtly and above all a real sense of place. All the grapes are harvested by hand and completely destemmed. After 40 days maceration, the wine is then aged in barrels for 20 to 24 months.

The aromas are big, brash and upfront. There is an amazing sense of the terroir here, with the herby, aromatic, sweet blackcurrant aromas mingling with spices and a late developing pepperiness. Mouth coating and rich on the palate. Low acidity, medium to high tannins. It is amazingly pure, herby and spicy. Blackcurrant fruit carries the most amazing pepper notes through the mid palate and right through to the finish. This is a big wine that will need some time for the tannins to soften and allow the majestic fruit to show its true colours.
