CHAPOUTIER SELECTION PARCELLAIRES - WHITE

2007 Ermitage Blanc ‘L’Ermite’ (per 6x75cl)
This wine is a selection of Chapoutier’s oldest Marsanne vines (some more than 100 years old). From a 0.5 ha plot on the top of Hermitage hill, behind the chapel. The nose displays and awesome freshness, which takes awhile to open up, but when it does it is unbelievably good. Very ripe aromas of elegant fruit, honeysuckle and minerals are intertwined with a delicately nutty note. Crisp and characterful. Dry on the palate, low acidity, yet it has an amazing freshness. Stunningly complex with lime, quince, apricot, honeysuckle, minerals/ granite. Possibly the most austere of the whites, shot through with a veritable bucket load of minerals and granity notes. Amazing structure, concentration and length.

2007 Ermitage Blanc ‘Le Meal’ (per 6x75cl)
Produced from vines that are over 50 years old. It has a deeper, denser nose than L’Ermite, displaying a smoky note along with hazelnuts and leafy spice. The palate definitely has the wow factor. Big, rich and powerful, low acidity and very oily with apricot, orange and hazelnuts. Amazing purity, less minerally than the de L’Oree but with possibly more weight and structure. At the moment the finish is a bit short, but will flesh out over time.

2007 Ermitage Blanc ‘De L’Oree’ (per 6x75cl)
From a parcel of vines called ‘Les Muret’ in the eastern part of Hermitage hill. The vines are around 70 years old and grown on alluvium soil, which is covered with a mixture of rolled pebbles and sand. The nose is currently a bit closed, quiet masculine with nutty, oily aromas of white fruits, apricot and honeysuckle. Over time the oak becomes more noticeable adding nuances of toffee and butter. The palate is like the nose, oily and masculine. Low in acidity, polished and elegant with white fruits, straw and hazelnuts. Amazing depth and balanced by the characteristic minerally-freshness. Very long with spicy notes.

2007 St Joseph Blanc ‘Les Granites’ (per 6x75cl)
This wine comes from a small selection of old Marsanne vines from steep granite slopes in the south of Tournon from the terroir called ‘Les Champs’. Grown on granite soils containing stones and gravel. The roots have to fight to penetrate this poor soil and this gives the wine a lovely fresh and aromatic quality. Aromas of acacia flowers, apricot, light honey and minerals are set against a background of toasty oak. Fruity and creamy on the palate. Low acidity, delicate yet full flavoured with acacia, apricot and white fruit. Lovely length with a touch of spice and almonds on the finish. Like the red an absolute bargain!

2007 Ermitage Blanc ‘Vin de Paille’ (per 3x37.5cl)
The Marsanne grapes are picked are picked in successive tris when they have attained full ripeness, then dried on a bed of straw for at least 2 months before pressing. Consequently the must is very concentrated, with a minimum of 360g of residual sugar per litre. After fermentation this gives a wine of 15% alcohol with an intense 105g of residual sugar per litre. Normally 300kg of grapes are enough to vinify a cask of wine, but for the Vin de Paille one ton of grapes are necessary. Maturation takes place entirely in new oak for between 24 and 36 months.
